A survey says today that almost 90-95% of email sending volume should not be in the inbox but either in a promo or Spam box. Only 5-10% emails today is done in single email conversations. This condition has caused ISPs (Internet Service providers) to use an array of techniques and technologies to keep out spammers to determine figure senders of email, and one such technique is the spam trap or honeypot.
Spamtraps are usually e-mail addresses that are created not for communication, but rather to lure spam.
This will helps to prevent legitimate email from being invited, the e-mail address will typically only be published in a place hidden from view such that an automated e-mail address harvester (used by spammers) can find the email address, but no sender would be encouraged to send messages to the email address for any legitimate purpose.
SpamTraps can be understood by two divisions, one is Honeypot and other emails not in use.
If you have email Ids which are not in use for a long time, the same email Id will have become spam trap as ISP will be seen that this email id has been closed for a long time and how far this email id is still receiving emails?
Hotmail and Rediffmail Spam Traps
Suppose Mr. James Kennedy open an email Id in Hotmail (JKennedy@hotmail.com) and Rediffmail ( email@example.com), for some reasons he may not use this two email IDs for a long time he may have abandoned this email id later for 2 years or more. Hotmail and rediffmail will close these email IDs for some time but still receives email.
Now the same email will become spam trap for Hotmail and rediffmail to understand that how many emails this email id still receives an email. This type of email IDs which are not used for the longest time should be avoided as these email Ids becomes spam trap.
Spamhaus Spam Traps
“The Spamhaus Project is an international non-profit organization whose mission is to track the Internet’s spam operations and sources, to give dependable realtime anti-spam protection for Internet networks, to work with Law Enforcement Agencies to identify and pursue spam gangs worldwide, and to lobby governments for effective anti-spam legislation.”
Yahoo uses SPAMHAUS SPAM traps to find spammers.
Spamhaus blacklist database is used by many ISPs like Yahoo Gmail, Hotmail, and Rediffmail etc, to identify and block the spammers.
